Many of the enquiries I receive are from women wanting to know more about a water birth. I am more than happy to support women wishing a water birth and can help you prepare for your birth choices.

One of the best UK websites is the Homebirth UK site www.homebirth.org.uk, which provides a comprehensive list of references and resources both about homebirth and water birth.

If you are planning a homebirth I have included a list of local pool providers and some national providers. This is not a comprehensive list but it does give you an idea of what is available locally.

Benefits of a water birth

  • Water acts as a good relaxant and for many women creates a safe birth environment

  • The buoyancy of the water aids mobility and encourages upright positions

  • Water is also a good form of pain relief. The psychological and physical benefits of relaxation aids the production of endorphins - the body's own form of pain relief

  • Using a pool can help to support a more gentle birthing environment

  • Water births tend to have less interventions

Things to consider for a home water birth

  • Both you and your partner need to feel comfortable about the idea of a pool birth

  • Think about where you are going to place the pool. How far from the water supply will you be and how are you going to drain the pool
  • You also need to consider the structural features of your house when deciding the best place to put your pool. Most houses are fine - but if you live in an old apartment you may need to seek advice

  • You might decide you would like to get out of the pool - if this is the case think about where you might like to have your baby, or what else you would like to have available to relax or birth on

  • Ensure you have a bucket and sieve for removing any debris from the pool

  • You need a good supply of towels both for yourself and your baby
